Science Excellence
Over the summer Jemma Goldstein completed a four week research placement as part of her Nuffield Bursary in the Centre for Astrophysics Research at the University of Hertfordshire. In recognition of her and other students’ hard work and accomplishments, an award ceremony was held on Tuesday 8th November at the University. Parents and project supervisors attended, creating an electric and stimulating atmosphere whilst providing Jemma with the opportunity to talk about her discoveries on variable stars to both beginners and experts in the field. During the afternoon, Jemma also gave a confident presentation, speaking most enthusiastically about her project. This presentation was followed by the awarding of the Nuffield Bursary certificates to the students. Furthermore, Jemma received her Gold Crest Award during the presentation, undertaking this challenge alongside her research placement. The afternoon was most enjoyable and gave Jemma an invaluable opportunity to share what she had learned over the summer.
The following evening Jemma was awarded the East of England Engineering, Science and Technology Award, again at the University of Hertfordshire. This is a prestigious prize which is awarded annually to the Outstanding Arkwright Scholar in the Eastern Region, in recognition of Excellence and Achievement in Engineering and Technology. On arrival there was an informal reception where Jemma was introduced to the Arkwright Trust’s National Director and the EEESTA committee. Jemma was presented with her award by John Armitt, Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, and gave a short speech thanking both EEESTA for the prize and the Arkwright Trust for all their support, as well as speaking about her extra-curricular activities and placements in STEM and her career aspirations. The ceremony was followed by a fascinating seminar on ‘Engineering the Olympics’ and an open forum which truly highlighted how every aspect of the London 2012 Olympic Games, particularly the Olympic Park, has been engineered to create a long-lasting legacy.
