David Starkey Lecture
Sixth Form historians travelled to Merchant Taylors’ School recently to hear the eminent and slightly controversial historian David Starkey speak.
The subject of the talk was ‘The Development of the British State’ which we all knew would broaden our political and historical horizons. Starkey was frank in his opinion that “Britain got it wrong, America got it right” explaining his reasons and showing us how he thought politics has gone backwards since the time of Henry VII. He criticised the way our political system is run and while many of us may not agree with his views, we found him interesting, stimulating and wonderfully outspoken.
