Summer Concert
This year’s summer concert began with the Chamber Orchestra performing the concerto for two cellos by Vivaldi, with Rachel Flint and Ellie Winter as soloists. They gave a spirited and stylish performance of this great example of the concerto, and a particularly expressive performance of the slow movement.
This high standard of string playing was very much in evidence as the Senior String Quartet performed the first movement of Beethoven’s quartet in F, Op 18. The level of musicianship and technical ability on display was stunning. Other instrumental ensembles performing included the Clarinet Choir, Saxes First, and larger ensembles such as Repertoire Orchestra, the Wind Band and Wind Orchestra. All performed to an excellent standard with much joy in their music making. The quality of collective sound and ensemble playing was evident for all to see.
Percussion Ensemble also made an appearance under the direction of Jason Holling performing ‘He lives in you’ from the Lion King with Zoe Bernstein as the vocal soloist. Vocal ensembles were represented by Cantabile (who sang two songs by Abba) and the Fourth Form Choir under the direction of Mr Davies singing a spiritual medley and ‘Homeless’ by Paul Simon. All the items were very well received by a large audience who enjoyed every moment of the concert.
The final item in the concert was the Jazz Band led by Mr Scott who concluded the evening with such rousing standards as In the Mood and the ever-popular Tequila.
