Staff v Student Cricket
Rain couldn’t stop play at the staff v students cricket match on 2 July. The action was simply relocated indoors to the Gym and, after a few subtle rule changes, a great time was had by all.
The staff, brilliantly led by Mr Turner, batted first. Mr Greatorex survived a superb opening over from Alex Hampton to establish the foundation of the innings. Impressive contributions from Mr Walker, Dr Miles, Mr Chhabra and Miss Humpage built an imposing score. That the staff did not finish with more than 65 from their ten overs was due to excellent bowling ‘at the death’ by Lexie Israel and Alex Hampton. Mr Catley, temporarily relieved of his umpiring duties, was repeatedly bamboozled!
The students suffered an early setback when Mr Chhbara struck in his first over and were always slightly behind on the ‘Duckworth-Lewis’ method. Nevertheless, the girls’ innings featured some impressive strokeplay and their final margin of defeat was narrow: just ten runs. Mr Walker added bowling success to his earlier batting exploits to claim the ‘Player of the Match’ award. He will be sorely missed when the two sides next meet, which we hope will be soon and outdoors!
