Last night we were treated to a wonderful evening of jazz by a variety of school ensembles and soloists. Jazz Band were joined by Upper 6 student Isi for Stevie Wonder’s hit ‘You are the sunshine of my life’ in the opening set of pieces. Performances by Percussion Ensemble followed before Lower 6 student Libby gave a deeply intense performance of the slow ballad ‘Misty’ on the flugelhorn.

A talented group of younger students performed three jazz classics, finishing with Kosma’s ‘Autumn Leaves’. Saxes Aloud and Trombone Ensemble performed with great flair, the latter including some impressively complex clapping in Pharrell Williams’ earworm of a song, ‘Happy’.

We were also delighted to be able to use for the first time a new digital piano, donated by the St Catherine Parents’ Guild, which will be of tremendous use to the Music Department especially when performing at outside venues and when on tour.

Middle School Jazz Band and Jazz Band concluded the evening, with the very last item, ‘Dancing in the street’, having the audience nearly dancing in the Performance Space instead! Congratulations to all involved in yet another impressive evening of music-making.
