Go4SET was such an innovative and inspiring project, a once in a lifetime experience. It was a chance for six of us in the boy’s and girl’s schools to learn more about STEAM. On the launch day, we experienced our first taste of STEAM. We used our engineering and maths skills to create a mini straw bridge for some masses. This simple yet thrilling task provided us with an introduction to our team members and newly formed project. We also met our mentors from Smiths Interconnect, a leading high tech company who guided us throughout the entire process. Towards the end of the launch day, we chose the topic Electronics with the running theme of being eco-friendly.

During the following weeks of the project, team ‘Meditronics’ came up with the idea of a pill dispenser, designed to help the elderly, with many features which made our product stand out from the current market. These hour-long sessions provided us with time to get together and share our research on the project and initiating our idea. Gradually, we pieced together our report, main research and presentation. We were very lucky to visit the company Smiths Interconnect in Elstree. We saw many high tech machines, and their company president and staff helped us develop and extend our project to professional measures. It was a day everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

On the presentation day, at the RAF Museum in Colindale, everyone was extremely nervous as we had been preparing for ten weeks. Working as a united team, we put together the display board and prepared our presentation. The judges were very friendly and listened carefully to every detail we mentioned. After the long, hard work our team put in, our effort had paid off. Our school won the trophy for the ‘most innovative project’. Everyone was thrilled by this award and extremely happy to complete this process. We also gained Industrial Cadets and Silver Crest Awards.
