It’s been an exciting week for debating and public speaking here at Habs Girls.

On Monday 18 November, a team comprising Maryam M, Priya K and Shalini S participated in the English Speaking Union’s prestigious Mace debate at North London Collegiate School. The motion was ‘This House Believes that an individual should be restricted to one return flight per year’ with Habs Girls acting as opposition. Our team acquitted themselves admirably and went on to win against NLCS to progress to the next round of the competition.

On Tuesday 19 November, two teams of three students participated in the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition held at Haileybury School. Each of the students had to take on the role of either Speaker, Questioner or Chair for their particular round and were judged based on the overall team score. The speeches spanned a range of topics from the importance of fashion to whether or not public figures should have the right to a private life. Both the Upper 5 and Middle 5 teams scored highly and were praised by the judges for their clear delivery and skilful performances. As a result, both teams are progressing to the Branch Final in January. Congratulations to Jamila S, Talia R, Tilly W, Claudia C, Madison S and Rachel P.

We wish all the teams the best of luck for their next rounds!
