On Saturday 7 March, a team of three from Habs Girls competed at the East Region Finals of the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition. The competition took place in the prestigious surroundings of Magdelene College, Cambridge, before a distinguished panel of three judges.

Jamila in her role as Speaker, had to present a five-minute talk on the WB Yeats quote ‘Education does not involve the filling of the pail, but the lighting of a fire’. She spoke eloquently and with humour on how important it was for schools to inspire a love for learning throughout one’s life. Tilly and Talia, in their respective roles as Chair and Questioner were confident and calm, making their guest speaker and the audience feel at ease.

Against tough competition and six other outstanding teams, the Habs Girls’ team were pronounced the winners, with Talia winning the individual prize for best Questioner. We wish the students the best of luck for Nationals, which will be held on Saturday 25 April at Churchill College, Cambridge.
