Well done to Tilly in Upper 5 for entering this national dance competition. You can follow the links at the bottom of the article to watch her performance and vote for her.

In an ideal world, lockdown would never have happened. This summer I was supposed to be sitting my GCSE examinations, competing at the English Trampoline Championships and then sitting back and enjoying the longest school holiday I would ever have. Instead I found myself stuck at home over the Easter holidays, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

One day I was scrolling mindlessly through social media, when I came across an advert for an international gymnastics and dance at home competition and, since I was unable to go to the gymnasium for my regular training sessions, I decided that this competition might be a fun alternative. The task was to create a routine lasting one minute to any Disney song or movie soundtrack and choreograph an exciting and engaging routine. I chose the beloved star of Nightmare Before Christmas – Jack Skellington and the Disneyland Paris Halloween Parade soundtrack. By reusing one of my old dance costumes, and just a little face paint, I was able to completely transform myself into the skeleton king. I wanted to make this routine as original and different as possible, so I decided to perform the routine at midnight on a pitch-black lawn, with only a few small DIY lights to guide me.

Overall the whole experience was incredible, as it gave me something positive to do during the lockdown period and also allowed me to perform a routine, which I had created, to people all across the world.

You can click here to watch my routine. The winner of the competition is chosen by public vote and, if you would like to do so, you can vote for me by clicking here.

Update 19 May: TILLY WON! She was named Overall Grand Champion and the Judges Choice performer. Congratulations to Tilly for her initiative in entering this competition and her inventiveness in coming up with such an original routine.
