Learning remains active, practical and fun, with an emphasis on developing thinking ability as well as honing important basic skills. Fostering a love of reading is paramount. The breadth of the Foundation curriculum is extended further with the introduction of French and swimming lessons.

Curriculum subjects are integrated as much as possible and draw on:

  • English, Mathematics, Science
  • History, Geography, Religious Studies
  • ICT, Art, Design Technology
  • French, Music, Spanish, Physical Education
  • PSHCE (personal, social, health and citizenship education)

Many strands are combined in topics that help pupils learn holistically across the curriculum. As well as trips to places of educational interest, visitors and workshops are a common way of enriching the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to read to, and with, a parent in the evenings and a little homework, in the form of spellings and times tables, is introduced in Year 2. Together with Foundation Stage, the pupils in Year 1 and 2 share assemblies and an annual musical and dramatic production before Christmas.

“ Children always have access to a wide range of materials to stimulate and support self-directed play and exploration. ”
