Sophia in L6 writes about this year’s Leadership Day.

On Friday 9 February, the entire L6 were treated to an amazing Leadership Day, where we had the opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and learn valuable team building skills. We started the morning off with an insightful talk from Miss O’Connor, where we discovered what type of team leader we were, and this was incredibly useful to understand what skills we could bring to our activities throughout the day.

Following this, we were lucky to have Vice Admiral and Master of the Royal Household Tony Johnstone-Burt speak to us about his rather humorous experiences in the Royal Navy and the lessons has learnt about leadership from his job. I am sure I can speak for our entire year group in saying that we thoroughly enjoyed this talk, and this was a perfect start to the day.

We spent the remainder of the morning we in the sports hall for our first leadership challenge. We split into small teams and went through a series of gruelling 3-minute challenges, ranging from carrying heavy logs to stacking large tyres. I can honestly say that this physical challenge was one of my favourite moments of this year as it was amazing to see how supportive we all were of each other and the grit and determination on everyone’s faces.

After lunch, my group met in the performance space where we soon discovered we would be performing 90 seconds of stand-up comedy for our peers. Although initially many of us were nervous about this task, each of us stood up and performed a piece based on ‘Something we hate’. The pieces ranged from Self-Checkout Machines to the struggles of being left handed. Our entire group was laughing continuously throughout the session and it was uplifting to see everyone try and succeed at something so far out of their comfort zones.

The L6 had a fantastic day and will be able to use the invaluable skills we learnt throughout our lives.  Thank you to Mrs Davies and Mrs Opie for organising such a fun day!
