During the summer term we hosted Vanessa Kisuule as our writer in residence.  Avital in Lower 5 writes about what it meant to her.

We were so lucky to have Vanessa Kisuule come into school as our writer in residence.  She lead workshops, gave an assembly and held individual sessions with us. In class we created a poem together and wrote our own using the “furniture” technique. Vanessa was fun and engaging, and we all enjoyed the session very much. She also gave a very inspiring assembly, in which she recited, by heart, two of her own poems, about how she grew up. It was incredibly empowering to see someone talk so passionately about the power that writing gives you to have a voice. I was especially lucky, as I got the opportunity to have an individual session with Vanessa to talk about an idea for my novel. She was very easy to talk to and she really helped me see how to get my ideas from my brain onto paper. Overall, it was a fantastic week, and I would love to see Vanessa come back to school to do some more work with us!
