On Monday 1 February, a team comprised of three Upper 5 students, Claudia, Madison and Helena (pictured left to right), entered the ESU’s Public Speaking Competition. They tell us a bit about the experience here.

“For the first time ever, it was held on Zoom but that did nothing to diminish the high standard of the evening.  We were all very excited to take part and have learned so much from the six rounds of speaking and questioning. The topics were all really interesting and included threats to democracy, climate change and the coronavirus. Madison spoke eloquently about the idea that there are two pandemics happening at the moment: Covid-19 and mental health.

It was a close competition (there were 45 minutes of judges’ deliberation!), and after a nervous wait, our team narrowly came third and an individual prize was awarded to Claudia for Best Chairperson. Overall, it was an extremely valuable and memorable experience.”

Well done to all three!
