‘Come and hear Dr Sue Black OBE, author of Saving Bletchley Park, champion for women in computing and passionate about getting everyone excited about the opportunities that technology offers’.

STEM: Dr Luena Hatcher Lecture
Guest Speaker: Dr Sue Black OBE
When: Wednesday 6 October, 7pm

We are delighted to invite alumnae working in (or interested in) STEM related industries to the 2021 Dr Luena Hatcher Lecture at Habs Girls School. We are honoured to welcome Dr Sue Black OBE as our guest speaker this year. Dr Black will be speaking about her life and work, women in computing and technology and what inspired her to Save Bletchley Park.

This event will be held in the Lecture theatre and will be followed by refreshments in the Dr Luena Hatcher room (previously room 231). In addition to the lecture, we will be ‘formally’ opening the Habs Girls STEM centre, made possible by the generous donation from Dr Luena Hatcher, OH 1944.

It promises to be an excellent evening so please do join us, whether you work within a STEM related industry or are simply interested in learning more.

About Dr Sue Black

A multi award winning Computer Scientist, Technology Evangelist and Digital Skills Expert, Dr Black was awarded an OBE for “services to technology” in the 2016 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. She is Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University, a UK government advisor, thought leader, Trustee at Comic Relief, social entrepreneur, writer and public speaker.

She set up the UK’s first online network for women in tech BCSWomen in 1998 and led the campaign to save Bletchley Park, home of the World War II codebreakers. Her book Saving Bletchley Park details the social media campaign she led to save Bletchley Park from 2008 to 2011. She has championed women in tech for over two decades, founding the #techmums social enterprise in 2013 and the pioneering TechUPWomen retraining underserved women into tech careers in 2019.

Dr Luena Hatcher

The STEM building would not be possible without the generous bequest from Old Girl, Dr Luena Hatcher. She was part of the outgoing Class of 1944 and after leaving Habs, went on to study at the London School of Medicine.

Dr Hatcher devoted her life to medicine and helping people in need of special care. Her medical career took her across the world to Canada, Fiji and South Korea. On returning to England in 1967 she became a Consultant Radiologist and worked in hospitals in Southend and Newmarket.

We are grateful for her generosity, which will enable many more Habs Girls to enjoy the sciences in our new STEM facilities.
