I recently took part in the Mary Renault essay competition. The Mary Renault prize is a Classical Reception prize for Sixth Form pupils awarded by the Classics department at St Hugh’s college Oxford.

Classical reception is how the classical world has been received since antiquity and after reading an article about the influence of the first Roman emperor Augustus on the Italian fascist dictator Mussolini I decided to write my essay on this topic. It explored the emperor Augustus’ imperial image and it’s later influence on Mussolini’s fascist propaganda. I enjoyed researching and writing this essay at the beginning of summer and was delighted when I recently found out that I had received a commendation from the Classics Tutors at St Hugh’s for my essay and an invitation alongside this for a tea with the tutors at Oxford.
