This half term students across the Middle School (Year 7, 8 and 9) are taking part in the Bright Ideas STEM challenge. This cross-curricular project is the result of a collaboration between the Geography, Physics, D&T and Art Departments and encourages students to find energy solutions for cities in 2050.

The design brief on the challenge website states:

What will cities look like in 2050? How will they be powered to be vibrant, healthy and clean places to live? The Bright Ideas Challenge, Shell’s cross-curricular schools’ competition, invites young people aged 11-14 to use their creativity, problem solving and STEM skills to devise innovative solutions that could power cities of the future.

Initially the students have completed a number of ice-breaker tasks, which has led to a sharing of initial ideas and the creation of prototype solutions. During week two of the challenge students are researching the energy supply problems that future cities might face e.g transportation, heating and lighting. They will then suggest possible solutions involving renewable resources of energy, energy efficient designs etc.

In week three students will collate their ideas and present them in a variety of ways: models, PowerPoint presentations, videos or essays are all acceptable before the best responses will be entered into the national competition.
