To kick off the restart of trips, Lower 6 Biologists set off to Juniper Hall, Surrey, to immerse themselves in different ecosystems and learn about biodiversity.

We were very lucky with the weather over the three days as we explored the effects of different abiotic and biotic factors on the lifestyles of different species in different ecosystems: woodlands, rivers, grasslands and ponds.

Guided by our tutors from Juniper Hall and our teachers, we practised different sampling techniques we had learnt about in our groups and collated our data to analyse statistically and draw conclusions.

I think it’s safe to say that it was such a great way for us to learn biology: out in the open, and completely throwing ourselves into the very places we were learning about. Without a doubt, I’m sure our all-time best memory was setting mammal traps and managing to catch a few very excited voles!

The entire trip was an incredible experience, made all the more enjoyable by the fact that we had all spent the majority of the previous year stuck indoors – we were all very disappointed that we had to leave the fun and beauty of Juniper Hall.
